Abstract

A model of gastric acid regulatory mechanisms is developed. The gastric acid control system protects the stomach against excessive acidity and maintains an optimal pH environment for the proper function of peptic enzymes. Our model includes vagal centers, intramural cholinergic and noncholinergic neurons, and parietal, gastrin, mast, and somatostatin secretory cells. It provides for the communication between the neural and endocrine cells through local (paracrine) and systemic (endocrine) transport. It also contains neural communication by short intramural and long vagovagal pathways.
