Abstract

SUMMARY This article presents the model of formation at the Virginia Institute of Pastoral Care (VIPCare). It begins with an historical recounting of how we have arrived at the present moment, moves to a description of VIPCare's present practices, and closes with a brief speculative look into the future. As a metaphorical narrative for this historical consideration, we offer a prime religious metaphor for journey and formation: the Exodus narrative. Within it, we find themes similar to the ones encountered by VIPCare over the past 39 years of its existence: initial security, emerging threat, wandering, wilderness times of lengthy confusion, followed by growing clarity, the sustaining providence of God, and finally the mixed reports of a Promised Land lying before us.
