Abstract

Model junction experiments simulating severe metallic wear are described. A dual shear mode of junction failure, which gives rise to a detached particle is demonstrated. Division of the particle volume by the distance traversed during particle formation gives a simulated wear rate. A linear relationship is found to exist when wear rate vs. simulated load area is plotted for a series of models of equivalent geometry. A probability factor K, calculated from the results suggests that all junctions of the type investigated will give rise to a particle.
