Abstract

ABSTRACT Egoli, City of Gold. This is the name the Zulu used for Johannesburg, a country whose lifeblood has flowed with gold since its initial discovery in 1886. For many years the discovery of gold in SA created wealth, prosperity, and the development of the South African infrastructure. Unfortunately, the mining industry has reached the stage where it has been forced into reducing production costs and retrenchment has thus become an unavoidable scenario, particularly within the gold mining industry. Retrenchment is one of the realities facing many companies in the world due to the changing industrial environment. South Africa has been no exception. This article will present an overview of the South African mining industry and sketch the scenario precipitating the retrenchments, and describe the role of the Center for Human Development-Gauteng, in the retrenchment process.
