Abstract
In the present study, a gross model is developed to represent the behavior of a plate on a layered medium. The model assumes that the displacements take place only in vertical direction, and the plate is only subjected to the vertical forces. Total depth of foundation is finite. The model developed in this study predicts the static response of a plate on a layered medium. The present model is a simple and a semi-analytical one. The method is based on the minimum potential energy and variational principles. Shear modulus of the foundation is assumed to be different and constant at each layer. The coupled equations derived for each layer by using minimum potential energy and variational principles, are solved by employing finite difference method and iterative procedure. Results are compared with the finite element model for the verification of the model. The computer code developed for the numerical model can be run even on small computers.
