Abstract

Prechemotherapy nursing assessment is an essential element of the cancer patient's care. Actual and/or potential problems associated with cytotoxic drugs may be prevented or minimized when nursing interventions are based on an accurate and systematic patient assessment. Two clinical tools were developed to assist nurses with the assessment phase of patient care. Prechemotherapy assessment guidelines identify qualitative and quantitative parameters for patient evaluation in three major categories: 1) physical status, 2) performance status, and 3) psychosocial/cognitive functioning. A corresponding documentation tool provides for the concise recording of assessment findings. These tools have potential for use in clinical practice, education, and research.
