Abstract

Presented is a thermodynamic model based on the supposition that phosphate concentrations in major rivers are controlled through equilibration with a solid-solution of amorphous ferric phosphate in amorphous ferric hydroxide. A series of laboratory based dialysis experiments were performed involving the manipulation of ortho-phosphate, hydrogen ion, and amorphous solid Fe/P ratios in samples consisting of model solutions and river water samples. Data from three different model solution preparation and six different rivers, once equilibrated, provide a good fit to model equations, satisfy the molar Fe/P and P/H ratio requirements, and provide an independent estimate of the solubility product of colloidal ferric phosphate which equalss the mean solubility product previously reported. In addition, all dissolved ferric iron is near saturation with respect to colloidal ferric hydroxide.
