Abstract A model of hierarchical galaxy clustering is developed on the basis of the hypothesis that correlations among galaxy positions tend to vanish on very small scales (where galaxies can no longer be treated just as points). The hypothesis yields two of the three constants that are still needed to determine three- and four-point correlations in the hierarchical model. The third constant is then shown to be deducible from the variance of the estimates of the two-point correlation.
