Abstract

The Minority Teacher Preparation Program (MTP2) is a model for increasing the number of Black teachers in the nation's classrooms which can be readily replicated. MTP2 is a collaborative project of a teacher preparation institution, a public school system, a community service organization, and a funding agent. MTP2 recruits candidates from two pools of potential Black teachers Local community residents with baccalaureate degrees who are not employed, under‐employed, or simply interested in a career change to teaching and former college students who, for a variety of reasons, particularly the severe reductions in financial aid during the past eight years, have had to discontinue their studies. A variety of support systems are components of the Program including school administrators and teachers who volunteer to serve as mentors for the MTP2 fellows. Funds are provided for tuition, fees, books, transportation, meals, and child care.
