Abstract
This paper reports a novel strategy for molecular weight distribution (MWD) control of polyethylene terephthalate during the polymerisation process which has been successfully implemented for the first time in an industrial polyester plant. The strategy combines prediction of the product properties using a mathematical model, and interpretation of the prediction using pattern recognition and an on-line expert system. Operational experience shows that the new system yields significant technical and economic benefits.
