Abstract

An instantaneous mode solution is developed for a rigid, strain-hardening cantilever beam. The response progresses through phases analogous to those for a perfectly plastic beam. In particular, the concentrated hinges and hinge bands for the perfectly plastic beam become regions of variable curvature and uniform curvature when strain hardening is introduced. Governing differential equations are derived for the time dependence of the mode amplitude and plastic region sizes.
