A Mixed Methods Study on Medical Student Attitudes About the Relevance of Neuroscience to Psychiatry

Abstract

The Society of Biological Psychiatry’s mission includes, “Educat[ing] young scientists and clinicians about the biological underpinnings of psychiatric disorders.” Although neuroscience is a key element to understanding the biological basis of psychiatric disorders, neuroscience is taught primarily in the context of neurology rather than psychiatry in many undergraduate medical curricula. While neuroscience education in psychiatry residency programs is improving, biological psychiatry education for medical students remains largely understudied.
