Abstract
OF the seven letters Christopher Smart wrote to Robert Dodsley between 1746 and 1748 only four are known to exist. Among the three missing letters is Smart’s letter to Dodsley of 30 January 1746/7.1 This letter last surfaced over a century ago, when it was auctioned at Puttick and Simpson’s gallery, 47 Leicester Square, on 4 June 1878.2 It has, until now, only been known by virtue of the description provided in Puttick and Simpson’s sales catalogue.3 Thanks to the assistance of Mrs Verity Andrews, I have been able to locate this missing letter in the Archives of the Longman Group at the Special Collections Library of the University of Reading (RUL MS 1393, 71/1/148).4 The letter is dated ‘Jan. 30. 1746.7. | Pemb.
