Abstract

The role and share of photovoltaic (PV) generated electricity in our nation's future energy arsenal is primarily dependent on its future production cost. This paper provides a framework for obtaining a minimum achievable electrical generating cost (a lower bound) for fixed, flat-plate photovoltaic systems. A cost of 2.8¢/kWh (1990$) was derived for a plant located in Southwestern US sunshine using a cost of money of 8%. In addition, a value of 22¢/Wp (1990$) was estimated as a minimum module manufacturing cost/price.
