Abstract

SummaryThe composition of a soil profile derived from olivine basalt in Northern Ireland is described with the assistance of a series of diagrams of the cumulative curve type incorporating mineralogical and particle size data. The weathering sequence of primary minerals in the basalt is olivine, labradorite, augite. Olivine alters to vermiculite and labradorite to kaolin. The soil resisted all attempts to achieve complete dispersion and its high state of aggregation is considered to affect its physical properties. The presence of quartz is attributed to glacial contamination.
