Abstract

Abstract A microwave data transponder system consisting of a reader and credit card sized (50 mm × 50 mm) transponders is presented. The transponders and their attached data sources (sensors) have no continuous energy supply. They receive their power from the reader at the moment of interrogation. The system allows a data flow in both directions from and to the transponder. The system design is described. The transmission of energy is investigated and an estimation of the maximum working range is made. A demonstration system with a transponder using a time-temperature module as a data source dummy achieves a maximum reading range of 6 m with 1 W radiated power at 5.8 GHz.
