Abstract

An overview on how MRI works has been given.Compared to microwave imaging, which maps the 3-D steady-state permittivity distribution of the imaged object, MRI can be viewed as mapping the 3-D transient permeability distribution created by applying a very strong static magnetic field. The high-Q nature of this transient is associated with a relatively long decay time, which allows for acquiring and processing the object response conveniently. Besides the theoretical fundamentals, two technical issues related to microwave engineering have been addressed, namely, RF switching and high-field RF coils.
