Abstract

Previous work on hardness/microstructure relationships for WCCo composites is reviewed and a new model relating hardness to l ̄ ∗ β , the non-contiguous mean linear intercept in the Co phase is developed. The general relationship proposed is H = h + cG( b Co l ̄ ∗ β ) m , H is the hardness, G is the shear modulus of Co, b Co is the Burgers vector for Co and h, c and m depend on the deformation mode (a transition in deformation mode is indicated at l ̄ ∗ β ~ 1 × 10 −6m ).
