Abstract

A microprocessor-based sleep apnea ventilator has been developed that can effectively respond to pressure variation during inspiration and exhalation. Utilization of the microprocessor in control of the sleep apnea ventilator facilitates the implementation of a more sophisticated control structure that can effectively regulate the pressure. The microprocessor also offers the needed capability for implementation of intelligent patient monitoring and alarm systems, which are not available on commercial units now. Plans for development of the present system include a stand-alone design without the desktop computer, and the control of pressure based on sleep stage to increase patient comfort. >
