Abstract

A micromethod for the identification of hydroxy acids is described. The method depends on converting the hydroxy acid to the corresponding bromo acid with phosphorus tribromide and then dehydrobrominating the bromo acid with potassium tert-butoxide in tert-butyl alcohol. The position of the hydroxyl group and the chain length of the hydroxy acid are established by identifying the products obtained on ozonolysis and hydrogenation of the dehydrated product.
