Abstract

AN ordinary shop-type dynamometer was upgraded into an automated engine test facility through the application of microcomputer control. The automated system required manual startup, but provided for automatic shutdown at the end of the test cycle or upon detecting a malfunction. The system was programmed to take an engine through a cycle of loads and speeds specified by the Engine Manufacturers' Association. The system performed well in measuring the effects of alternative fuels on the durability of diesel engines.
