Abstract

Abstract This paper outlines a microcomputer-based land information system recently installed in the Hydro Electric Commission (HEC) of Tasmania. The paper is introduced with an examination of the surveyor's role in land information management. Then, in view of popular scepticism, justification is given to microcomputer-based LIS and some advantages of such a system are noted. The LIS is described in a general context in order that its application to other organisations can readily be identified. The paper concludes with comments on the system life cycle and the integration of new technology with land information systems.
