Abstract

Oxygen is an essential metabolite and alterations in tissue oxygen levels cause or contribute to many pathophysiological states. An effective method to non-invasively measure the oxygen concentration in biological systems based on oxygen-dependent quenching of phosphorescence (Vanderkooi et al., 1987; Wilson et al., 1988). This method can provide rapid and accurate measurements of tissue oxygen levels at particular points or two dimensional maps of the oxygen distribution in tissue in vivo (Rumsey et al, 1988; Wilson et al., 1992; Vinogradov et al., 1996). Although near infrared phosphors can provide measurements through cm depths of tissue, there remains a need to be able to selectively measure oxygen at specific sites within the tissue, particularly in deeply embedded regions of tissue that cannot be measured from the surface.
