Abstract

We propose a methodology for performance prediction, in terms of reach and capacity, of uncompensated submarine optical systems. The methodology is composed by back-to-back simulations and analytical analysis using enhanced Gaussian noise and power feed equipment voltage models. Employing the methodology, we compare two coherent optical solutions for submarine systems (DP-QPSK at 90 GBd and DP-SP8QAM at 60 GBd) considering different span lengths. The results indicate that the maximum reach and total capacity are equal to 15000 km and 48 Tb/s for the DP-QPSK at 90 GBd and 5800 km and 313.5 Tb/s for the DP-SP8QAM at 60 GBd.
