Abstract
The SU 3 scheme of Elliott is extended to take account of mixing of configurations across major harmonic oscillator shells. A specific interaction is chosen for this mixing, which can be solved exactly within an SU 4 scheme. As illustrations the spectra of 8Be and 16O are calculated.
