Abstract

Abstract. The rate of assimilation in chinook salmon of an aryl‐fluoroquinolone antibacterial from the environment as a function of time and of added chemicals (surfactants and hyperosmotic saline) was measured. A 0·01% Tween 80 antibacterial solution provided the highest serum levels of the aryl‐fluoroquinolone. This surfactant and four levels of antibacterial were used to evaluate the efficacy for elimination of the Aeromonas salmonicida carrier state in juvenile spring chinook salmon. All treatments, excepting the control, completely eliminated the asymptomatic carrier state within 48h post‐treatment. The carrier populations were monitored for 10 days and no reinfection was detected.
