Abstract

A study of the cutting efficiency of size no. 50 and size no. 70 files and reamers in enlarging predrilled holes in moist bovine bone was performed. The time taken to penetrate a 5-ram thick specimen under constant load of 1,000 g and constant speed of 1,700 rpm using a Giromatic handpiece was determined. Triangular instruments cut better than square ones. When repeated runs were performed with the same instrument, only the size no. 50 instruments lost cutting efficiency when runs one and six were compared.
