Abstract

A method to estimate material properties of viscoelastic materials is described for finite element method (FEM) applications. Finite element analysis is performed on specimens with simple geometry to find the relationships between the ratio of apparent Young's modulus to Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, and the shape factor. It is suggested, on the basis of the analysis results, that Young's modulus and loss factor of a viscoelastic material be first derived from the transmissibility measured on a specimen having a small shape factor, and that the Poisson's ratio be subsequently obtained in such a way that the FEM results on the force-deflection characteristics agree with the experimental results for a specimen having a large shape factor. An example of the method is illustrated for a specific viscoelastic material.
