Abstract

In practical cold rolling of thin strip, the upper and lower work rolls may contact each other beyond the edges of the strip if the strip is very thin and there is no work roll bending system applied. The edge contact force between the upper and lower work rolls changes significantly with rolling conditions for asymmetrical rolling, which has not been clarified before. In this study, a modified influence function method is used to analyse this asymmetrical cold rolling of thin strip with work roll contacting at the edges. A numerical simulation code is developed based on the deformation compatibility in rolling and lateral directions between the backup roll and work roll, the work roll and strip and the two different speeds of the work rolls. The rolling force, intermediate force between the work roll and backup roll, work roll edge contact force, edge contact length and the strip shape and profile for cold rolling of thin strip are obtained. Simulation results also show that the strip width has a signifi...
