Abstract

A method is proposed for decoupling the system of kinetic equations for the population of an excited state and the line intensity. The method is based on the use of the Planck and Rosseland approximations for different frequency intervals within the absorption line profile. As a result, evolution of the density of excited atoms within a layer of gas or a non-equilibrium plasma can be described by a simple differential equation of diffusion type.
