Abstract

The ultimate goal of pipeline leak detection is to locate the leak source timely and accurately. A method called multi-level leak source localization which combined of regional localization and precise localization was presented to overcome the difficulty of selecting the appropriate wavelet packet decomposition (WPD) components to get the precise localization result. Firstly, the area of the leak source was determined through the signal amplitude attenuation characteristics. Then, the localization results were obtained by the cross-correlation analysis of every WPD component. Finally, the accurate leak source location was obtained through the average of the localization results in the area. Through the related experiments of pipeline leakage detecting by acoustic emission (AE) under different environmental (pipeline exposed to the air and buried pipeline), the study confirmed that the presented method can accurately and effectively locate the pipeline leak source (location error was less than 2.43%).
