Abstract

Abstract A method is described of obtaining the corrected s -wave strength function and the corrected average spacing of s -wave resonances from the observed resonance parameters from low energy neutron cross section measurements. The method of correcting for “missed” resonances is based on the Porter-Thomas distribution of the reduced neutron widths. Several graphical illustrations from the results of an iterative calculation by a digital computer are presented to give a general idea of the nature and numerical significance of the corrections. Finally, a set of master curves is given, from which one can estimate the correction factors using simple algebraic calculations for various experimental conditions.
