Abstract

A method was developed to clear puparia of Musca autumnalis De Geer, for sex determination. Results of testing more than a dozen chemical agents showed that dipping 6-day-old face fly pupae in 0.1% detergent Joy for 20 minutes was a satisfactory procedure. The puparia were cleared sufficiently to allow easy recognition of the sexes with the naked eye. The dipping did not adversely affect the survival rate of treated pupae or the longevity and fecundity of adult flies which emerged from these pupae. Sexual dimorphism was manifest in the compound eyes and adjacent areas.
