Abstract

A diagram in the form of a plot of ln( Y /Y i) vs. In θ is presented for estimating the surface diffusion coefficient when the film mass transfer resistance is negligible. This method can be used for systems with either linear or non-linear isotherms, because Y /Y i is independent of the type of adsorption isotherm and of the values of the equilibrium parameters. Experimental data on the batch adsorption of p-chlorophenol and p-nitrophenol on anion exchange resins have been used to test the proposed method. The result shows that surface diffusivity estimated by this method is in good agreement with that determined by a non-linear regression numerical method.
