Abstract

ABSTRACTA method for estimating the population of prehistoric pueblos is presented in the form of an equation (population equals one-third floor area in square meters) arrived at by means of extrapolating specific Pueblo ethnographic data to specific archaeological data. This formula may be utilized with caution by Southwestern archaeologists and will hopefully provide stimulus for the presentation of additional formulas and methods by other archaeologists from all geographic and cultural areas endowed with a good ethnographic basis for extrapolation.
