Abstract

A novel approach to the estimation of the number of distinct density or grey levels available in a photographic negative is presented. The method is particularly concerned with those cases where the negative has been written from digital data or where it is to be digitized subsequently. An estimation is made of the number of significant binary digits obtainable by digitizing the negative based upon the spatial statistics of bitplane images.
