Abstract

A method has been developed for the quantitative determination of soluble cellulose and, thereby, insoluble residue, utilizing cupriethylenediamine hydroxide (cuene) to dissolve soluble fractions of cross-linked cellulose. The dissolved cellulose is precipi tated, recovered, washed, dried, and weighed. The method has been applied successfully to a wide variety of cross-linked cottons. It is apparent from weight balances from recovered soluble cellulose and insoluble gel that certain cross links from nitrogen resins are unstable to cuene and are stripped from the cellulose.
