Abstract

A method that can be used to extend the capabilities of the integrator of computer mathematics systems to include symbolic evaluation of indefinite integrals containing special functions or their products is described. The approach is based on a technique of indefinite integration which was first described in a previous article [Piquette, J. C., Van Buren, A. L. (1984). Technique for evaluating indefinite integrals involving products of certain special functions. SIAM J. Math, Anal. 15, 845-855]. Special-case expressions which are useful in evaluating integrals containing either one or two Bessel functions, Legendre functions, Hermite functions, or Laguerre functions are also given. An implementation of this method in the SMP™ language is described. A tabulation of some of the integrals that have been evaluated using the method is given.
