Abstract

A wave generator in a strain-wave gearing is composed of an oval cam and a ball bearing arranged on the oval cam, and is in contact with a flexible spline. As a result of the complex deformation of the flexible spline, the ball bearing receives a force with a compex distribution from it. However, an efficient method for measuring the load on the bearing ball has not yet been developed. This paper presents a simple method for measuring the load on each bearing ball in a wave generator using the relationship between the load on a bearing ball and the maximum statical moment to rotate the ball around the line of action of the load. Furthermore, the changes in the loads on the bearing ball during the assembly process and the effect of the applied torque on the load on the bearing ball are clarified.
