Abstract

A mathematical model of seismically excited structures, including executing devices of control systems, represents a system of differential equations. The main problem in numerical integration of these equations is the stiffness of the equations. The integration procedure for a stiff differential equation may give rise to a long computation time and, for conventional integration methods, the computation may be unstable. A stable method for fast integration is proposed in this paper. The continuous dynamic system is transformed into an equivalent discrete-time system. The discretization yields a recurrent scheme, which enables to increase the computation speed and results in a stable computation procedure. The efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated in numerical examples. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
