Abstract

Summary The selectivity and coordination of overcurrent relays are the most commonly studied characteristics of the protection used in distribution systems. This paper proposes a method for detailed analyses of the overcurrent protection in distribution systems, taking into account the phase imbalances, allowing considering their effects. For this purpose it is also described a method for fault calculation in unbalanced distribution systems. Mathematical models were developed for the main protective devices and functions used in distribution systems. The method allows complete three-phase representations, and the solution is obtained directly in phase coordinates. To verify the efficiency of the proposed method two distribution systems were analyzed. The usefulness and applicability of the proposed method can be seen in the results and comparisons.
