Abstract

A method for correcting the electrical impedance and open-circuit receive sensitivity of a hydrophone for the effect of an added extension cable is described. The method requires the measurement of the complex electrical impedance of both the hydrophone–cable combination and the extension cable alone. From these data, the impedance of the hydrophone alone and an electrical loading correction are calculated. The loading correction is applied to a measurement of the open-circuit sensitivity of the hydrophone–cable combination to derive the open-circuit sensitivity of the hydrophone alone (at the end of its integral cable). When compared to direct measurements of the hydrophone without the extension cable, the calculated values show good agreement within measurement uncertainties, with differences of less than 0.2% for the impedance and 0.5% for the loading correction.
