Abstract
The metallurgical mechanism responsible for the initiation and propagation of circumferentially oriented, fire-side cracks on waterwall boiler tube steels was investigated. The results showed that cracks were initiated by a sulfidation corrosion/thermal fatique interactive mechanism. Crack propagation occurs by an environmentally assisted thermal-fatigue mechanism.
