Abstract

The sequence of events involved in the furnace brazing of Ti−3% Al−2.5% V foils, using Al−1.2% Mn as the filler alloy, has been determined with the use of hot stage and scanning electron microscopy. The molten aluminum alloy flows over previously nucleated particles of the conversion product TiAl 3 and onto the titanium alloy substrate. The TiAl 3 continues to nucleate and grow as long as there is a sufficient supply of the filler alloy; a prolonged brazing period results in the complete consumption of the aluminum alloy and a porous braze zone.
