Abstract

Introduction: Although anticoagulation agents have been part of reconstructive surgery for 30 years, anticoagulation protocols vary widely among microvascular surgeons. Currently 96% of reconstructive surgeons use anticoagulants in free flap procedures. No consensus exists on the use of anticoagulation therapy after microvascular surgery in the head and neck region. Many surgeons advocate using aspirin or other antiplatelet agents but little objective evidence supports this practice.
