Abstract

The goals of the mental health program which have developed within the Peace Corps program may be viewed both in general and in highly specific terms. These two perspectives are closely interrelated and interdependent. As seen from the one perspective, the mental health program seeks for the individual the very values which the Peace Corps itself offers him: an opportunity for intellectual and emotional growth; for discovery of his own capacities, and in the case of the young person who has not yet found himself, an opportunity for molding his developing self-identity. As seen from the other perspective, the mental health program has been constructed in response to definite needs which are fundamental to the effective operation of the total Peace Corps program.
