Abstract
Land price data from the Victorian Valuer-General's office were examined to assess their suitability for constructing a land price index for Melbourne. Wide variations were found in the various measures available and a number of problems and sources of error were identified. A number of tests were devised to assess the accuracy of the data and several alternative index series were constructed. Recommendations are made that might lead to the construction of an ongoing quarterly index.
