Abstract

A ricetto was a medieval fortified place generally used as a warehouse for the goods of a community and as a refuge for its persons during the attacks from marauders and mercenaries of the armies which were invading the country. Several of such structures were widespread during the Middle Ages in the northern Italy. The best well-preserved example of them is the Ricetto of Candelo in Piedmont, a ricetto that, until recently, was used for wine and crops storage. Here we will show and discuss this ricetto, in particular its orientation. It is interesting because of two astronomic alignments; one is that of its streets which are aligned along the moonrise on a minor lunar standstill. The other is that of a side of the ricetto, which is aligned along the sunrise on summer solstice.
