Abstract

AbstractAn unprovenanced fragment of wood sculpture from Haddon Hall is shown to be a medieval desk-end of special iconographical and sculptural interest. Probably dating from shortly after the 1380s, it incorporates one of the earliest known examples of the fox-as-bishop sequence of scenes in European woodwork, as well as the earliest extant English vernacular inscription in woodwork.
