Abstract

Little is known about young people who have the misfortune to be permanently ill or who are so crippled that they are dependent on others to a varying degree throughout their lives. Young invalids form a small proportion of the population of our hospitals for the elderly. To keep young patients in Geriatric Units is bad policy because these Units cannot provide the stimulating atmosphere essential for younger people. Whitaker (I959) described the plight of the young in chronic sick wards; however, hardly anything is known about young invalids living at home. It has been suggested that Special Units should be established for their care. The present study was designed to ascertain the future needs for a special hospital unit to care for the young invalids in the Leeds area.
